In addition to staging a boxing match, what else were Utahns doing at the bottom of the lake when it was largely dried up 75 years ago?
“In the early ’40s when the lake was nearly dried out, my father and friends ran a car on the mud flats,” says Rick Cox, a lifelong user of Utah Lake. “They rolled it as many times as possible, tipped it back up, and did it again.”
It was such as sight, says Cox, “Pretty soon large crowds of people from Provo were coming every Sunday to watch these crazy kids rolling a car on the lake bed.”
No cars or humans were harmed in the event, I’m told.
Of course, Department of Natural Resources probably wouldn’t let that fly today. Then again, hopefully the DNR can help keep the lake wet enough in extreme weather conditions to keep future generations from doing the same (wink, wink).
